Otorhinolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery

The Department of Otorhinolaryngology, Head and Neck surgery at Dresden Medical School treats more than 400 cases of malignancies per year. The primary sides include malignancies of the oral cavity, the pharynx, the larynx, the salivary glands, the nasal cavity, the paranasal sinuses, the skull base, the neck and the skin. Additionally, we annually take care of more than 150 patients with benign lesions in the above mentioned localizations. In order to cure and to minimize surgery related side effects we carefully select the optimal approach including transoral laser assisted surgery, endoscopic and or microscopic surgery and reconstructive techniques together with microvascular flaps.

Our scientific focus is on biomarkers that enable an individualized treatment for squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck. Additionally, we carry out clinical trials to establish the best treatment for our patients. 

Another focus are biomarkers in patients with paraganglioma in the head and neck that give information about the dignity and the clinical course of the disease.

FDG uptake in normal tissues assessed by PET during treatment has prognostic value for treatment results in head and neck squamous cell carcinomas undergoing radiochemotherapy.
