Organ Cancer Centers

The National Center for Tumor Diseases Dresden (NCT/UCC) offers patients a holistic care concept which, in addition to optimal prevention, diagnosis, therapy and aftercare of cancer, also includes supportive areas such as psychosocial counseling or nutritional counseling. This is mainly provided in the various organ cancer centers and is organized on an interdisciplinary basis. The core element of interdisciplinary cooperation is the weekly tumor boards, in which the best possible treatment strategy is developed for each patient individually, taking into account the latest scientific findings and current guidelines.

The interdisciplinary core outpatient clinic of the NCT/UCC serves as the central point of contact, which is supplemented by a large number of specialized consultation hours in the individual organ cancer centers.

Ten organ cancer centers have been established at the National Center for Tumor Diseases Dresden (NCT/UCC), which are certified according to both the requirements of the German Cancer Society and DIN EN ISO 9001. In addition, the NCT/UCC is home to one of the centers for familial breast and ovarian cancer, which has also been certified by the German Cancer Society.

Certification as an Organ Cancer Center is tied to various requirements. These include, for example:

  • An organ cancer center must have a certain number of different medical specialists who have extensive experience and expertise in the treatment of a specific type of cancer
  • For each tumor entity, an interdisciplinary tumor board must be held at least once a week, in which specialists from the various disciplines (surgery, pathology, radiotherapy, radiology and hematology/oncology) are mandatorily represented
  • Offer of nutritional and socio-legal counseling, psycho-oncological and palliative care
  • Proof of defined key figures (number of operations per year, number of patients in studies, psychosocial care rate), which are determined by the German Cancer Society and defined with target specifications

In annual audits, the requirements for the organ cancer centers are reviewed and evaluated by the certification bodies.
